Cats are usually smaller animals, but there are some cats that are fairly large, and then there are really small cats. There are many reasons to get a small cat. Small pets in generally are usually apartment friendly saying that they’re smaller and don’t need a lot of space. Cats don’t have to be small to live in apartments, but the smaller the cat, the more space an apartment will be for it. Here are 10 small cats that never weigh over 12 pounds!

Singapura Cat
The little, energetic Singapura weighs only 4-8 pounds. They are smart and affectionate with family. They have a lifespan of 11-15 years, and were developed in the ’70’s. As their name suggests, they do originate from Singapore. They are generally healthy, but one health problem is pyruvate kinase deficiency. They only should be brushed weekly.
Munchkin Cat
These little short-haired cats are small and playful! If you’re looking at small cats and thinking about getting one, the munchkin is most-likely for you! They are friendly to both other pets and people. They are affectionate to their owners and quite intelligent like all cats. There is a debate over the Munchkin however. Some say that the they aren’t a real cat breed, while others say they are. They have been documented since the 1930’s in England.
Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex is little cat weighing less than 8 pounds. Eye colors for the Cornish Rex include Amber, Aqua, Blue, Copper, Green, Gold, Hazel, Odd eyed, orange and yellow. They are active and playful.
Their history began on July 21, 1950, when the first known Cornish Rex was born at Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, England. and in 1957, 2 Cornish Rex cats came to Northern American. They are loving and don’t have a lot of grooming requirements because of their short coat. They are actually not good with other pets, but yet they should be fine with people and even like to play fetch. Unfortunately, they are not good with children nor other pets.
Japanese Bobtail
Japanese Bobtails are vocal, active and loving. No one knows their true origin, but it is believed that around the 6th century, ancestors of today’s Japanese Bobtails traveled across other areas outside of Japan such as China. They do not require a special diet, but should always be on a highest quality cat food you can find. They can have a short, medium or long coat. Expect to pay up to a $1000 for one Japanese Bobtail; they are not easy to find.
American Curl
The American Curl is playful, smart and kind. This breed is one of the youngest cat breeds and received full recognition from the international cat association in 1996. Their lifespan is about 12-16 years. They love to play and often do well with children.
Balinese Cat
The Balinese cat is a quite, child friendly cat. They come from Thailand as well as from the U.S. and were developed as a breed until the 1940’s and ’50’s. The Balinese Cat is easy to groom as they don’t have an extremely long coat. They are up to 18 inches long, not including their tail, however only weight 5-10 pounds and they have a lifespan of 9-15 years.
Turkish Angora Cat
The Turkish Angora Cat is a small, intelligent cat breed. They weigh only up to 9 pounds and 12-18 inches long. They are playful, energetic and generally found in white with lavender, chocolate or Himalayan, and Calico variations. Eye colors include light blue, sapphire, emerald, green-gold, gold, amber, copper, or one color on each eye.
Korat Cat
Korat is a small to medium sized cat. They are only 6-10 pounds and are good with family. Children should always be gentle when playing and cuddling with cats in general. They do not need much grooming, and need to be bathed very little. They live for about 10-15 years and originate from Thailand.
Laperm Cat
The Laperm Cat, only weighing 5-8 pounds, is a smaller cat breed. They are affectionate with their owners and generally friendly to even strangers. They are easy to groom and generally friendlier toward other pets compared to other cats. Their lifespan is about 10-15 years. Dwelf
The Dwelf is small, hairless cat similar to their sphynx, except only smaller. They are only 6-7 inches tall and weigh 4-9 pounds. They are social, playful, active, intelligent and friendly. Health conditions include lordosis and pectus excavatum. They do not need to be brushed, as they do not have a coat, however they do need to be bathed regularly.
