Everyone likes a nice dog. Some may like a dog native to their country, and lot of us live the U.S. In this article we’re going to talk about 10 North American dog breeds, specifically from the the United States. What American Dog breeds are there. Some may be obvious, while others may not be so obvious. Some may have “American” on the name, while others may be deceiving!

American Hairless Terrier
The American Hairless Terrier is as the name says! It came straight from the US! This little dog only gets about 12-16 inches tall and weighs about 10-16 pounds. These dogs are one of the longer living dog breeds and can live up to 16 years!
Believe it or not, there are actually two types of American Hairless Terriers; hairless and short-haired. The short-haired really don’t need to be groomed hardly at all, and the hairless type only needs to be protected from sunburn.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a energetic, medium-sized dog. They are usually 21-26 inches and about 55-70 pounds. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever only lives for about 13 years usually. These dogs are loyal and should be easier to train. They do need a good amount of mental stimulation as a good amount of exercise saying that the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an energetic dog breed.
Alaskan Malamute
This husky-looking dog stands about 23-25 inches tall and weighs about 75-85 pounds. They’re lifespan is about 10-14 years. It’s recommended to brush their coat at least twice a week and should have plenty of exercise daily.
Some health conditions may be hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thrombopathia, chondrodysplasia (“dwarfism”), hypothyroidism, inherited polyneuropathy, von Willebrand’s disease, and day blindness.
Boston Terrier
The little Boston Terrier is sure a family dog! They’re friendly, small and simply cute, especially with those big, round eyes! These dogs are about 15-17 inches long, 12-25 pounds and usually lives about 11-13 years.
Exercise may vary between each individual, but they should all have regular exercise. Eye problems could be cataracts, corneal ulcers and glaucoma. Other health conditions could be deafness and patellar luxation (can be compared to a “trick knee” in humans).
Boykin Spaniel
The Boykin Spaniel is not only a sporting dog, but also a family dog as well! These dogs may even suffer anxiety if they’re separated from their owner. These dogs are about 15-16 inches tall and weigh about 25-40 pounds. It’s highly recommend to groom them at least once a week, but preferably 2-3 times a week.
Boykin Spaniels need plenty of exercise daily. They are generally easier to train and quite lovable. It is recommended though to socialize them at a young age to ensure that they age around people.
Plott Hound
The Plott Hound is medium in size and requires low maintenance. This dog is the perfect dog for highly energetic people. These dogs require daily exercise, but hardly require any grooming at all because of their very short coat. These dogs live about 12-14 years and common health problems may be hip dysplasia and ear infections.
Chinook
Although you may be thinking of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, this dog is definitely not a helicopter! The Chinook weighs about 22-26 inches tall and weighs anywhere from 50-90 pounds.
The Chinook lives an average lifespan of 12-15 years and is a friendly dog (although should be socialized at a young age to ensure that he is used to be around people). These dogs were bred for work, so they are quite energetic and need daily exercise, even if they don’t want to!
Toy Fox Terrier
The Toy Fox Terrier is energetic and very tiny! These dogs don’t get any taller than 12 inches and only weigh about 3-7 pounds! Toy Fox Terriers have short hair so they only need a brush every week or so.
These dogs are quite energetic and love to explore. Health conditions could be patellar luxation, Legg-Perthes, demodicosis, congenital, and hypothyroidism with goiter.
Cockapoo
These playful, affectionate dogs are sure to melt someone’s heart. These dogs were bred for someone who wants a healthy companion dogs. Saying that these dogs are affectionate is an understatement! These dogs are also energetic and are super playful. These dogs also don’t shed much, so Cockapoos would be a dog for someone who doesn’t want dog hair everywhere.
Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd isn’t actually Australian breed. Some think that Australia was involved, but it is still considered an American breed. Males are about 20-23 inches tall and 50-65 pounds while females are 18-21 inches tall and 40-55 pounds.
These dogs are very athletic and require daily exercise. The Australian Shepherd requires weekly brushes and health concerns could be hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataracts and some types of cancer.
