It could mean a handful of things, but your dog is most likely just having a bad dream. He/she may also be barking, growling, chewing on an imaginary toy or padding his feet. Your dog may also going through pain (always take your dog to the vet if they are), but it’s unlikely. If your dog is sleeping, do not wake them. They could nip or even bite you.

If your dog is howling out of the blue, it may be because he (or she) is in pain. In that case, you should take them to the vet immediately.

If your dog is howling when you’re away, they’re probably suffering from separation anxiety. In this case, you should comfort your dog whenever you’re going to leave your dog.


There’s probably nothing to worry about. Your dog, unless they’re actually awake, is probably just having a bad dream. They may also be in pain, but it’s unlikely if they are asleep. Never wake them, as they may get startled and bite you. There is really no reason to, unless they are keeping everyone awake, as bad dreams are just dreams.
