The Jindo is a medium-sized dog breed from South Korea. These dogs are pretty energetic, so they’re great for the athletic dog owner. These dogs are alert, yet affectionate dogs. They are loyal, intelligent and watchful. These dogs also look a lot like the Shiba Inu.

These dogs live for around 10-12 years. They are quite intelligent dogs and should be easier to train. They are not suited for apartment life unfortunately, so if you do live in an apartment, the Gaddi Kutta probably isn’t for you.

Caucasian Shepherd Dog

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a large dog breed that gets around 23-30 inches tall and weighs anywhere from 90-170 pounds. These dogs live have a shorter lifespan of 10-12 years, which is usually a side-effect for larger dog breeds such as this one.

Top 5 Mexican Dog Breeds

Mexico isn’t really known for their dog breeds other than Chihuahuas. There are more than just the Chihuahua, but not everyone really wonders about what other Mexican dog breeds. Almost everyone knows about the Chihuahua. They’re a very popular dog breed, but the other dog breeds we will talk about you might not even know existed.

Chamuco

The Chamuco is a rare dog breed that originates from Mexico. Don’t expect to find these dogs in any pet store in Mexico as you’re actually looked down upon if you breed them. This is because they were bred for illegal underground dog fights. These dogs have a short, smooth coat, so you probably don’t have to groom these dogs often. The American Bulldog, Mexican Bulldog, Staffordshire and Pit Bull Terrier were all bred to order to make the Chamuco.

Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced”show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee”) is a short-haired dog breed that comes from Mexico. There are three size variations of the Xolo. They include the toy, miniature and standard. Toy versions are 10-14 inches tall, miniatures are 14-18 inches tall and standards are 18-23 inches tall. Toys weigh 10-15 pounds, miniatures weigh 15-30 pounds and standards weigh 30-55 pounds.

These Mexican dog breeds are affectionate with the family. Young Xolos need a substantial amount of exercise as well as adults. Recommended health tests include Ophthalmologist Evaluation (for all Xolos), Cardiac Exam (for all Xolos), Patella Evaluation (for miniature and toy Xolos).

Chinese Crested

It is really a mystery where these dog breeds actually come from. Some say that the Chinese Crested originated from Mexico, while the AKC suggests that they were from China. According to The Smart Canine, these dogs originate from Mexico.

These dogs can get about 11-13 inches tall and weigh 8-12 pounds. The Chinese Crested can actually live for 13-18 years, which is fairly long for dogs. Some ideas for exercise for these dogs include short walks and playing. Recommended health tests for the Chinese Crested include Ophthalmologist Evaluation, Patella Evaluation, Cardiac Exam, PRA-RCD3 DNA Test and a PLL DNA Test.

Calupoh

The Calupoh, also called the Mexican Wolfdog, is a large dog breed that was developed from a genetic project that bred wolves and dogs during the ’90s. They are strong, algile, noble and loyal. Males are about 24-29 inches tall and females are about 22-27 inches tall. These dogs were used as sheepdogs, cattle dogs and also companion dogs.

Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a small Mexican dog breed and one of the most popular dog breeds that comes from Mexico. Chihuahuas get only get 5-8 inches and no more than 6 pounds. They live for 14-16 years and recommended health tests include a Cardiac Exam, Ophthalmologist Evaluation, and Patella Evaluation. Long-haired Chihuahuas should be brushed weekly, while short-haired Chihuahua only need to be brushed occasionally.

Mexico does have other dog breeds outside of the Chihuahua. Some of Mexico’s dog breeds are large, while others are small. Some have long hair, while others are short. There aren’t actually a ton of Mexican dog breeds out there though. If you read some of our other articles like this one, you may have noticed that also.

What dog breeds in this list can I buy in the U.S.?

Obviously, the Chihuahua will be the dog breed you’ll most likely be able to buy. You could also buy Chinese Crested and Xoloitzcuintli dogs as well. For the dog breeds you’re most likely won’t find for sale, are usually the Chamuco and the Calupoh. These dogs are pretty rare and most people don’t even own them.

Chinese Crested dogs are over $1000 US (in the AKC marketplace) however, it really depends where you buy them from. Some may want more or less for their dog. Some may even give their Chinese Crested for free. It really depends on the seller. Xolos ( Xoloitzcuintli dogs) go for $1800 US (in the AKC marketplace). Chihuahuas go for $2000-$3000 US in the AKC marketplace.

Want a wolf as a pet? Well, you should think twice. Wolves are very ferocious, need to be in packs, and besides, some states in the U.S. don’t allow wolves (for good reason). Other than those reasons, they could also kill other pets and animals. So although they are beautiful, the reasons not to get one are far more than reasons to get one.

However, you can get a dog that looks like a wolf! Dogs that look like wolves are a much better choice. They are usually not as aggressive (unless you get a wolfdog) more readily available, usually are more friendly (some dogs aren’t, so make sure to get a friendly one) to other animals and might even be able to live in your home. This article doesn’t talk about the Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute, saying that those are some of the dog breeds that will most likely come to your mind first when it comes to dogs that look like wolves.

Shikoku Inu

The Shikoku Inu definitely resembles a wolf. The Shikoku comes in a brown color or a gray color which you will want if you want a dog that looks like a wolf. The Shikoku Inu is about 17-22 inches tall and 25-55 pounds. Because of their size, they have a lifespan of only 10-12 years, however that is generally a side-effect for a lot of medium to large dog breeds.

Kugsha

The Kugsha is a medium to large dog that gets about 20-27 inches tall and 60-110 pounds. They are also known as the Amerindian Malamute. The Kugsha is not a common dog breed and not recognized by any national or international kennel club. They require weekly grooming and a significant amount of exercise and need plenty of attention; Kugshas are usually prone to separation anxiety.

Tamaskan

Tamaskans stand at about 24-28 inches tall and weight anywhere from 55-88 pounds. They live for about 14-15 years; about as long as the Siberian Husky. Cryptorchidism, epilepsy, hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are some possible health conditions that the Tamaskan can get.

They are a fairly new dog breed, being bred in the 1980’s. They are usually friendly and gentle (if not neglected, went through the proper obedience training and so on.) dog breed however, they are not a good beginner dog.

Canadian Eskimo Dog

The Canadian Eskimo Dog is a large working dog. They can weigh anywhere from 61-105 pounds (depends on sex) and can be anywhere from 24-37 inches! They are energetic dogs and do require a bit of exercise.

They have a medium-length coat, so grooming requirements are not high nor low. They are not good with other pets, so if you are looking for a dog that is good with pets, this dog probably isn’t for you. They have an average lifespan of 10-15 years.

Czechoslovakian Wolfdog

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog can get up about 25 inches tall. They weigh 44-57 pounds and need plenty of exercise. The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is not pet friendly, so if you do have other pets they probably aren’t for you.

These wolfdogs need plenty of socialization, as they aren’t always the friendliest dogs. Unfortunately if you are a beginner, this dog breed isn’t for you.

Finnish Lapphund

The Finnish Lapphund are about 16-21 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 33-53 pounds. They live for about 12-14 years and health tests include Hip Evaluation, Elbow Evaluation, Patella Evaluation, Ophthalmologist Evaluation, PRA Optigen DNA Test, Pompe’s Disease DNA Test, and Degenerative Myelopathy DNA Test. They they originate from Finland and are a spitz breed.

Greenland Dog

The Greenland Dog is a rare dog breed, and can cost as much as $800 dollars however, the price will vary for these dogs. They can get along with children well, but always consider socializing them while they’re young to help ensure that they’re friendly toward everyone.

Northern Inuit Dog

The Northern Inuit Dog can get as tall as 32 inches and can weigh as much as 110 pounds. Health conditions for these dogs include cataracts, epilepsy as well as hip dysplasia. 60-90 minutes of exercise is recommended for these wolf-like dogs. If their wrinkles are not cleaned frequently, dust, water, food and other things can build up in them, possibly causing infections and making them just smell bad. They are also usually hard to housebreak and have trouble breathing because of their flat face.

Pugs will grunt, snore, slobber, and snort. If you don’t want a dog that does those things, then the these dogs are probably not for you.

Pug Diet

Pugs may have special sensitivities to some foods, so be careful. Just like any dog, they will need the best diet you can give them. If you choose to give them dry food, give them the food with the least ingredients. Wet food is great, but it may cause plaque to build up.

Homemade foods are generally the best way to go if you can afford it. If you make your own dog food, you then have more control over what they eat. These dogs will usually beg for many things that aren’t healthy for them. Exercise is good for almost every animal out there, including pugs.

It’s crucial to know if your dog is compatible with any other dogs in the house. It’s also very important to know if the dog you want is good with family.

Fortunately, the pug is usually a great family dog. They usually have a friendly nature and usually don’t get angry that much. They are affectionate and robust so they can handle a little more rough handling.

You’d be surprised at how many dog breeds other countries outside of the United States has. There are actually many that you never knew before. Some of those are Chinese dog breeds. There are actually a lot of dog breeds from China, especially ancient China. Today, we will be going over 10 of them.

Pekingese

These little dogs are only 6-9 inches tall and only weigh up to 14 pounds. They live for about 12-14 years and a good family dog, however just make sure to watch them when they’re around younger children.

These dogs shed seasonally and should be groomed at least weekly as their coat is pretty long. They should have moderate exercise, however they are not an athletic dog. They can participate in canine sports at their own pace.

Pug

Pugs are actually one of the many Chinese dog breeds if you didn’t know. They are about 10-13 inches tall, 14-18 pounds and live for 13-15 years. These Chinese dogs are affectionate and great for the whole family. Unfortunately pugs are not always the most energetic, but moderate exercise is needed to keep them healthy. Recommended health checks include Hip Evaluation, Patella Evaluation, Ophthalmologist Evaluation, and Pug Dog Encephalitis DNA Test.

Shar-Pei

Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin is actually pretty controversial. But many agree that they actually DON’T come from Japan and instead one of the many Chinese dog breeds. One theory was that they was bred in China, but was then introduced to Japan. Others think that they were bred in Korea instead. The Japanese Chin is 8-11 inches tall, 7-11 pounds and has a life expectancy of 10-12 years.

They are good family dogs and are pretty good with other dogs as well. Despite their long coat, they need weekly brushes and only have to be bathed monthly. It isn’t recommended to take these dogs outside without a leash because of their stubborn nature.

Chinese Imperial Dog

The Chinese Imperial dog is a Shih-Tzu breed. They are under 9 inches tall and under 9 pounds. They live for 10-15 years. The AKC actually believes that this breed is just a miniature Shih Tzu, however others believe that the Chinese Imperial Dog has a special gene that makes them different. Major health concerns include Canine Hip Dysplasia and Patellar Luxation. They need at least weekly to daily grooming.

Lhasa Apso

Male Lhasa Apso are 10-11 inches tall (females are slightly smaller), weigh 12-18 pounds and have a life expectancy of 12-15 years. They are good with family and the two coat types, the long coat and puppy coat both need regular maintenance. They need moderate exercise with some mental exercises.

Manchurian Hairless

The Manchurian Hairless isn’t a super known dog breed, however the people who know about them have no doubt that they are hairless! They are loyal and devoted. They are outgoing and sociable, but bark at everything. They are very expensive, in fact they go to $1,000 US dollars for one! They are brachycephalic and may have a difficult time breathing.

Kunming Wolfdog

The Kunming Wolfdog is a medium, athletics dog. They are 25-27 inches tall, 66-84 pounds and have a live expectancy of 12-14 years. Because of how aggressive they are, they are not the beginner dog. However, they are also a good guard dog. They need weekly grooming as well,

Formosan Mountain Dog

The Formosan Mountain Dog, also known as the Taiwan dog actually originates (as the name says) from Taiwan. They are 16-21 inches tall, 26-40 pounds and have live for about 10-13 years. They are highly active and need at least an hour of exercise a day. They are not the best family dog mainly as they are aggressive and territorial so they are also commonly used as guard dogs.

5 Large Dog Breeds

Some people just like a big dog. Having a large dog can have many positives and negatives. For instance, a large dog may be strong, but doesn’t live very long. Some may be aggressive, which DOESN’T make them good family dogs at all. And obviously they are large, which makes them need a larger home. A large dog probably shouldn’t live his entire life in an apartment. But again there are many positives to them as well. Now, let us begin!

Bernese Mountain Dog

This big dog is about 23-27.5 inches tall. It weighs about 80-115 pounds and lives for about 7-10 years and because of their coat, they do best cold climates.

They originate from Switzerland and one of four mountain dog breeds from canton of Bern. They are the only one to have a longer, silky coat. Other names include Berner Sennenhund and Bernese Cattle Dog.

Tibetan Mastiff

Whenever Mastiff is in the name, it almost always means one thing, BIG. And the Tibetan Mastiff is a great example. They grow as a minimum of 24-26 inches (depending on gender) and can weigh over 100 pounds!

They only need weekly brushes despite their medium to long coat. Unfortunately, they are not amazing with children however, so this is not the perfect family dog.

Oh also, despite how smart they are, they tend to be independent and stubborn and actually doesn’t tend to react positively to treats — in other words, you should go to treats when they’re aren’t doing what you want them to! They are notorious to great in training classes, but refuse to do any commands once at home. Common health conditions include Hip Evaluation, Elbow Evaluation, Thyroid Evaluation, and Ophthalmologist Evaluation.

Spanish Mastiff

The Spanish Mastiff is massive, and when I say massive I MEAN massive. In fact, this dog is almost the height of a miniature horse (but please don’t ride them though) and they can weigh as much as a tenth of a ton (200 pounds)! They have an average lifespan for their size of about 10-12 years.

They should be groomed regularly. Believe it or not, they are actually fairly affectionate, although they are still probably not the best family dog simply because they are so large. They are a healthy dog as well.

Great Dane

The Great Dane, just like all the dog breeds that we went over so far, is very large. In fact, if it were to stand on 2 legs, it would be taller than most people. They live for about 7-10 years. They are about 28-32 inches tall on all four legs and weigh anywhere from 110 to 175 pounds. Obedience training is a must as they are very large and strong. Their origin (according to AKC) is from Germany.

Great Pyrenees

The great Pyrenees, or Pyr for short is about 25-32 inches tall and weighs 85-100 pounds and up (depending on species). They live for 10-12 years and is fairly affectionate, but still not recommended for small children because of their size.

Any children that are near them should be aware of the dog at all times and simply not be rough to avoid any injuries for the dog, but mainly for the person. They are unfortunately pretty hard to train. But one positive thing about them is that they only need moderate exercise.
