10 Jet-Black Dog Breeds (With Pictures)

There are so many dog breeds to choose from. Dogs come in a variety of colors, but there aren’t a lot of black dog breeds. You will see a lot of dog breeds that are partially black, but you see a lot of completely black dog breeds out there. They aren’t extremely rare, but they aren’t a very common color for a dog.

Black Dog Breeds

Here are some black dog breeds. Now, a lot of these dog breeds have a variety of coat colors, so you have to find one that is black. For example, pugs can be black, but they are also seen in other colors as well.

Mudi

The Mudi is a medium-sized dog breed. They are around 15-18.5 inches tall and weigh 18-29 pounds when they’re full grown.

They are almost completely black in color. They are affectionate, intelligent and quite energetic. Grooming is pretty easy as they only need occasional baths.

Schipperke

The Schipperke, getting around 10-13 inches tall, was recognized by the AKC in 1904. They should be brushed weekly. The Schipperke is a considered a good family dog and live for around 12-14 years. The Schipperke weighs about 10-16 pounds.

Thai Ridgeback

The Thai Ridgeback, a medium-sized dog breed, is affectionate. They are around 20-24 inches tall, and weigh 35-75 pounds.

Hip dysplasia, although rare, can occur in these dogs. They do best with proper training and socialization and only need to be brushed occasionally.

Skye Terrier

The Skye Terrier gets only around 9-10 inches tall. Males weigh about 35-45 pounds and females are just a tad bit lighter. Note that black is not their only color. As you can see, the skye terriers above are not completely black.

They are a good family dog breed and are usually happy with whatever level of activity that’s comfortable with their owner. They are intelligent, but strong-willed. Although their coat looks like it would look it’s high-maintenance, they only need to be brushed weekly.

Belgian Sheepdog

The Belgian Sheepdog is a medium-sized dog breed, getting around 22-26 inches tall when full-grown. They are around 45-75 pounds and live for about 12-14 years.

They were recognized by the AKC as a dog breed in 1912. The Belgian Sheepdog is energetic, so they will need an active owner. They should go through the proper socialization and puppy-training classes.

Briard

The Briard is a larger dog breed, getting around 22-27 inches tall and weighing up to 100 pounds! They live for around 12 years and need plenty of exercise.

They should be brushed multiple times a week. The Briard is an overall healthy dog breed, but recommended health tests and health conditions that should be tested for include Hip Evaluation, Ophthalmologist Evaluation, and a Stationary Night Blindness Optigen DNA Test.

Giant Schnauzer

The Giant Schnauzer is indeed, a large dog breed. They are around 23.5-27 inches in height and weight 55-85 pounds. They are an affectionate dog breed and are overall healthy. They are energetic, so they will need an energetic owner.

Croatian Sheepdog

The Croatian Sheepdog is a medium-sized dog breed, getting about 16-20 inches in height and weighing around 29-44 pounds. These sheepdogs live for around 13-14 years and aren’t known to be overly friendly. They only need occasionally bathed and brushed to remove dead hair.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The clever Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a smaller sized dog, getting only around 14-16 inches tall and weighing 24-28 pounds. Their life span is about 12-14 years. They are an affectionate and intelligent dog breed which learns easily.

Wetterhoun

The Wetterhound only needs minimal grooming. They actually don’t need to be bathed that much thanks to their water proof coat! They are fairly energetic, so they will need daily exercise. As you can see, the Wetterhound above not entirely black, but these dogs can be.

Health conditions that they can get include Hip Evaluation, Elbow Evaluation, and Severe Combine Immune Deficiency Syndrome. They are 21.5-23 inches tall and weigh 50-75 pounds. They live for around 13 years.


As you can see, there are still a number of black dog breeds to choose from. Black dogs are quite neat. They are also easy to see when it snows!
