The Shiba Inu is an alert dog that originates from Japan. The Shiba Inu is a medium sized dog and has a short coat. Unfortunately this breed does shed a lot. They were introduced to America in 1954.
Appearance
Shibas are usually a red and crème colored around the stomach, up their neck and on their snout as well as under their tail. They have curly tails with pointy ears, which makes them a spitz dog.
History
The Shiba Inu is an ancient breed originating all the way back to 300 B.C.! They are the smallest of the most ancient breeds of Japan, the Shikoku, Kishu, Akita, Hokkaido, Kai and Shiba. Shiba Inu in Japanese means “brushwood dog.” It is said that after WWII, the Shiba Inu was almost extinct, however they are now Japan’s most popular companion animal. The name “Shiba Inu” was officially coined in Japan in the 1920’s.
Is the Shiba for you?
If one is looking for a dog that isn’t too small, nor too big, alert, playful and funny, perhaps the Shiba is for you. If one is not looking for a dog that can easily run away if not on a leash, a dog that will produce strange and obsessive habits, and/or a dog that will “scream” at you for doing something it doesn’t like (which may make people think your abusing it), perhaps the Shiba isn’t for you.
