Dachshunds are a great dog breed and will make a great pet for the family. These dogs are not large at all. In fact, standard-sized Dachshunds don’t get any taller than 9 inches or so.
Dachshund means “badger dog” in German as they were bred to hunt badgers.
Standard-sized Dachshunds are a small dog, weighing as little as 16 pounds. They are not tall dog breeds, but they are known to be longer than other dog breeds for it’s size.
Dachshunds Can Be Stubborn
Although they can be trained, it will take some effort to train these dogs. They are smart dogs and are capable of being trained, but just know that they can be strong willed too.
Remember this if you’re going to get a Dachshund. The best way to train these dogs is to have something to motivate them like their favorite toy or food.
Dachshunds Bark A Lot
Dachshunds bark — a lot. It’s important to know this if you have neighbors and just can’t tolerate a lot of noise.
Some Dachshunds may bark less than others, but they do bark a lot. Dachshunds may bark because someone rang the doorbell, or even if a car goes by.
Dachshunds Are Hard To Potty Train
Unfortunately, Dachshunds are known to be hard to potty train. But you can train them faster through consistency and dedication.
One Dachshund owner said that she had a Dachshund that didn’t get fully potty-trained until it was seven! But, she went on to say that she potty-trained a Dachshund puppy in 6 weeks though consistency and dedication.
Dachshund Are Prone To Getting IVDD
As Dachshund owners know, these dogs can are prone to IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), a hereditary disease.
If your dog has IVDD, it can develop a spinal injury no matter how careful you are. About 25% of Dachshunds will have a spinal injury.
Just remember that if you get a Dachshund that it may develop a spine injury later on saying how common it is for these dogs to get them.
