German dog breeds go far beyond just the German Shepherd. There are a lot and today we’re going over 15 of them! There are even more than these, but this should be able to give you a few ideas if you’re going to get a dog soon!

Affenpinscher

Height: 9-11.5 inches

The affenpinscher is a small, curious, dog that is friendly and loyal. They are famously amusing and they are sometimes called “Monkey Dogs” and “Ape Terriers.”

Dachshund

Family friendliness: Family friendly, not the best with young children, but depends on the individual.

Family friendliness: Should be fine with family, but depends on the individual.

Doberman Pinscher

Giant Schnauzer

Family friendliness: Good with family, not the best with young children, but individuals may be different. Should be socialized to help ensure friendliness to all people.

These german dog breeds are fairly large. They are usually black in color and have a dense wiry coat.

Rottweiler

Height: 22-27 inches

Weight: 80-135 pounds

Life Expectancy: 9-10 years

Friendliness: Depends on the individual

Family friendliness: Not recommended because of size and has a possibility to be aggressive. This depends. Socialization is always recommended for larger dogs.

The Rottweiler is a robust dog and is a good guard dog. They don’t need to be groomed often as they have a shorter coat.

Pomerania

Height: 6-7 inches

Weight: 3-7 pounds

Life Expectancy: 12-16 years

Friendliness: Friendly

Family friendliness: Should be great with family, but depends on the individual.

This little dog should be great with the family. Despite the little size of this dog, they tend to have a “big dog demeanor.”

Eurasier

Family friendliness: Pretty family friendly, but depends on the individual.

Eurasiers are medium sized dogs with a medium coat. They can be a mixture of different colors.

German Shepherd

Family friendliness: The American Kennel Club states that they are, but they can be aggressive and are of larger size, so socialization is recommended, and they are probably not the best family dog because of size.

The German Shepherd, Or German Shepherd Dog is a strong, popular guard dog. They are a larger dog breed and have an average lifespan for a dog of it’s size.

Boxer

Height: 21.5-25 inches

Weight: 50-80 pounds

Life Expectancy: 10-12 years

Friendliness: Fairly friendly, depends on the individual.

Family friendliness: Pretty family friendly, but individuals may be different. Socialization can be done to insure friendliness to everyone.

The boxer is similar in appearance to pitt bulls, except these originate from Germany. They have a short coat, so grooming isn’t a huge priority.

American Eskimo Dog

Height:  Depends on type, toys are 9-12 inches tall, miniatures are 12-15 inches tall and standards are 15-19 inches tall.

Weight: 6-10 for toys, 10-20 for miniatures, and 25-35 for standards

Life Expectancy: 13-15 years

Friendliness: Friendly

Family friendliness: Should be great with family, but depends on the individual.

Despite it’s name, many believe the American Eskimo Dog actually originates from Germany, and not America.

German Pinscher

Height: 17-20 inches

Weight: 25-45 pounds

Life Expectancy: 12-14 years

Family friendliness: Should be good with family, but depends on the individual.

This sleek dog breed is one of Germany’s oldest dog breeds. because of their coat, grooming isn’t a huge deal, but like with any dog, bathing wouldn’t hurt.

German Spaniel

Height: 18-21 inches

Weight: 40-55 pounds

Life Expectancy: 12-14 years

Friendliness: Fairly friendly

Family friendliness: Fairly Family Friendly, but depends on the individual.

The German Spaniel, also known as the Deutscher Wachtelhund is a brown spaniel originating from Germany.

Great Dane

Height: 28-32 inches

Weight: 110-175 pounds

Life Expectancy: 7-10 years

Friendliness: Friendly

Family friendliness: Good with family, but depends on the individual.

The Great dane is a massive German dog breed. In fact, it’s one of the largest in this list. They need very little grooming because of their short coat.
